Summary
In October 1955, highway worker and experienced outdoorsman William Roe reported encountering a large, hair-covered humanoid on Mica Mountain near Tête Jaune Cache, British Columbia. During the daylight encounter, the creature allegedly approached to within about 20 feet, allowing Roe to observe its appearance and behavior in unusual detail. He described it as female, roughly six feet tall and covered in dark brown, silver-tipped hair. Roe later documented the encounter in a sworn affidavit.
Additional Notes
Roe said he initially mistook the creature for a grizzly bear when he saw it about 75 yards away near an abandoned mine. When it stood upright and entered the clearing, he realized that its proportions and movement were unlike those of a bear. As it approached, Roe described unusually long arms, broad feet, a short thick neck and visible breasts, leading him to identify the creature as female. According to Roe, the animal eventually came within approximately 20 feet, squatted beside the brush and pulled branches toward itself, stripping off leaves with its teeth. After apparently detecting Roe, it backed away and walked rapidly toward the forest. Roe raised his rifle and briefly considered shooting it, but lowered the weapon because the creature appeared too human for him to risk killing it. Before disappearing, the creature allegedly produced an unusual vocalization that Roe described as somewhere between laughter, speech and a whinny. He later searched the area and claimed to find signs suggesting that it had slept beneath a tree and had been feeding on vegetation. Two years later, on August 26, 1957, Roe formally swore that his written account was true to the best of his observation and recollection. Sasquatch researcher John Green later noted that two zoologists who had corresponded with Roe about wildlife regarded him as a knowledgeable and reliable observer, although neither had witnessed the encounter itself.
