Summary

In September 1941, Jeannie Chapman and her three children reportedly encountered a large, hair-covered humanoid approaching their isolated home near Ruby Creek, British Columbia. Chapman initially thought the figure was a bear, but described it as walking upright and standing about 7.5 feet tall. Fearing for her children, she shielded them with a blanket and fled with them downstream to the nearby village. Large human-like footprints were reportedly found around the property afterward, and unusual activity allegedly continued for several nights.

Additional Notes

According to Jeannie Chapman’s later account, her nine-year-old son first noticed the figure emerging from the woods and thought it was a cow. Chapman initially mistook it for a very large bear, but changed her mind when it stepped onto the railway tracks and appeared clearly bipedal. She described a small head, almost no visible neck, an exceptionally broad chest and long arms. According to Chapman, the creature continued approaching while she waited for her children to gather. When it had come within roughly 100 feet of the house, she held up a blanket to shield the children from the figure, backed away toward the river and then ran with them downstream to the nearby village. Her husband George, who was working on the railway at the time, was not present during the encounter. When he and other railway workers returned, they reportedly found large human-like footprints near the house. Later accounts describe prints around 16–17 inches long, without claw marks. A plaster cast was reportedly made, although the original cast was later broken and discarded. The incident did not apparently end with the daytime sighting. Over roughly the following week, the family reportedly heard unusual howling near the property and continued to find tracks. The Chapmans ultimately abandoned the house. The case later became particularly influential for Canadian Sasquatch researcher John Green, who regarded Ruby Creek as one of the classic early Sasquatch encounters.
