Summary
On the morning of 6 April 1966, students and teachers at Westall High School and the neighbouring Westall State School in suburban Melbourne reported seeing one or more unusual objects moving through the clear daytime sky. Witnesses commonly described silver or grey disc-shaped objects that hovered, changed direction rapidly and moved without obvious wings or conventional engines. Some witnesses followed the objects toward a nearby area known as The Grange, where several later reported that one of them had descended close to the ground before departing. The large number of witnesses made the Westall incident one of Australia's best-known mass UFO sightings. No definitive explanation for the event has been established.
Additional Notes
More than 100 witnesses are firmly associated with the event, while later accounts commonly estimate that around 200 or more students, teachers and local residents may have observed some part of the incident. Witness accounts differ regarding the number of objects seen and their exact movements. Some witnesses later recalled police or military personnel arriving in the area, while others reported being discouraged from discussing the incident publicly. Claims that photographs were taken and subsequently confiscated have also become part of the Westall story, but no verified photographs of the objects are known to survive. Various conventional explanations have been proposed over the years, including aircraft and high-altitude research balloons, but none has achieved general acceptance as a definitive explanation of all the reported observations.
The Location Today
The Grange Reserve in Clayton South is now a public park commemorating the 1966 Westall sighting. It features a UFO-themed playground, information panels, picnic facilities and other amenities. The nearby school grounds are separate from the public reserve and should not be treated as freely accessible.
