Summary

In 1975, residents of Moca, Puerto Rico, reported a series of unexplained livestock deaths attributed to a mysterious creature soon nicknamed “El Vampiro de Moca.” Animals were said to have been found with small puncture wounds and unusually little blood, while witnesses reported strange cries, wingbeats and occasionally a large unidentified animal. The episode predates the modern Chupacabra by twenty years and is now often regarded as an important precursor, although contemporary descriptions did not always resemble the later Canóvanas creature.

Additional Notes

The first major wave of reports began in late February 1975 in the Rocha area of Moca. Contemporary newspaper coverage described unexplained deaths of cattle, goats, poultry and other farm animals, often emphasizing small wounds and an apparent lack of blood. The sensational nickname “El Vampiro de Moca” quickly became attached to the mystery. Reports soon spread beyond Moca to nearby municipalities. Suggested explanations included snakes, vampire bats, escaped animals, human activity and even occult practices. Some residents also reported unusual aerial lights or UFO-like phenomena during the same period, which further expanded the legend. One important difference from the later Chupacabra is the reported appearance of the 1975 creature. Some accounts described something feathered or winged, while the famous 1995 Canóvanas creature was usually described as a small upright being with large eyes and spines along its back. For that reason, the Moca Vampire is better treated as a possible precursor rather than simply an earlier sighting of the same cryptid. The reports gradually faded by July 1975. A modern investigation by Radio Ambulante found no conclusive veterinary or police explanation preserved in the contemporary reporting, leaving the exact cause of the deaths uncertain.

The Location Today

Moca is a municipality in western Puerto Rico whose local identity still includes the historical vampire stories. The reported livestock incidents are associated with locations around the municipality rather than a documented public memorial or preserved encounter site.
