Summary

In August 1954, an extraordinary aerial phenomenon was reportedly observed over Tananarive, now Antananarivo, Madagascar. Edmond Campagnac, an Air France technical official and experienced pilot, described a brilliant green ball descending toward the city before disappearing behind the hills. According to his account, the phenomenon reappeared and passed along Avenue de la Libération, revealing what appeared to be an elongated metallic body accompanied by a green glow and orange flashes. Numerous additional witnesses were reported, although their accounts have not all been independently verified. Later reports mentioned unusual electrical effects and disturbed animals. Despite subsequent investigations and competing interpretations, the event remains unidentified.

Additional Notes

One evening in August 1954, Edmond Campagnac was standing outside the Air France office in Tananarive with several colleagues, waiting for mail from an arriving aircraft. The sky was clear, and the streets were busy with people leaving work. According to Campagnac, a brilliant electric-green ball suddenly appeared in the eastern sky. It descended at an angle, seemingly passing near the Queen's Palace before disappearing behind the hills south of the city. The witnesses initially suspected a meteor and waited for an impact. None followed. Approximately half a minute later, Campagnac reported that the luminous phenomenon reappeared above the city, changed direction and travelled along Avenue de la Libération. As it passed, he believed he could distinguish an elongated, aluminium-coloured body accompanied by a green luminous region and intermittent orange flashes. Campagnac estimated an altitude of approximately 100 metres and a length of roughly 40 metres. These figures were visual estimates, not independently measured dimensions. He described the phenomenon as silent and said the observation lasted about two minutes. Subsequent accounts associated the sighting with temporary lighting disturbances and unusual reactions among livestock. However, no independently authenticated electrical records or contemporary investigation report have been established. Campagnac's account was published in 1964 and reproduced in 1970. A later COMETA report discussed the incident, while a 2004 newspaper investigation revisited his testimony and also encountered people who disputed the story. Although August 16 is the commonly cited date, Campagnac's earlier published recollection specified only a Monday in August 1954. Meteor-related explanations have been proposed, but no identification has been conclusively established. The event remains a notable historical UFO report whose dramatic details depend largely on retrospective testimony.

The Location Today

The reported sighting took place over central Tananarive, now Antananarivo, particularly around the former Avenue de la Libération and the surrounding hills. The historic cityscape has changed considerably since 1954, and the precise position of Campagnac and the object's alleged flight path cannot be reconstructed with certainty. The area remains part of Madagascar's active capital, with public streets and historic landmarks. There is no verified crash site or dedicated monument commemorating the reported UFO observation.
