Summary
On the morning of 16 September 1994, dozens of children at Ariel School in Ruwa, Zimbabwe, reported seeing unusual objects near the school grounds during their morning break. Many described one or more silvery or dark objects hovering or appearing to land in nearby scrubland. Some of the children also reported seeing small humanoid figures dressed in dark clothing, often describing unusually large dark eyes. No teachers witnessed the reported encounter. The children's accounts, interviews and drawings subsequently attracted international attention and made the Ariel School incident one of the best-known mass UFO encounters involving young witnesses.
Additional Notes
Approximately 60 to 62 children, mostly between six and twelve years old, were associated with reports of the event. Zimbabwean UFO researcher Cynthia Hind investigated the incident shortly afterward, and psychiatrist John E. Mack of Harvard Medical School later visited Ariel School and conducted extensive interviews with twelve of the children. The children produced drawings depicting the objects and beings they said they had observed; the widely reproduced drawings were made on the following Monday, more than two days after the reported encounter. Some children later described what they interpreted as a form of telepathic communication with the beings, reporting mental images or impressions concerning environmental destruction, pollution and the potentially harmful effects of technology. These experiences were not reported by all witnesses. No photographic or independently verified physical evidence of the reported craft or beings is known to exist.
