Summary
In early July 1947, unusual debris was discovered on the Foster Ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Personnel from the Roswell Army Air Field recovered the material. On July 8, 1947, the military issued a press release stating that a "flying disc" had been recovered. Later the same day, the statement was withdrawn and officials identified the debris as a weather balloon. In later years, the U.S. Air Force concluded that the material was most likely connected to the classified Project Mogul. The Roswell Incident remains one of the most widely debated UFO cases in history.
Additional Notes
Numerous additional witnesses and testimonies emerged in later decades.
The Location Today
The Roswell area remains a centre of UFO tourism, with the International UFO Museum in the city. Alleged debris and impact locations lie outside Roswell and are disputed; one alleged site near Corona is on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, while other claimed sites may be on private land. The museum should not be confused with the alleged crash location.
