Summary
On the night of 4 October 1967, witnesses near the fishing village of Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, reported seeing several bright lights associated with an unidentified object descending toward the water. After the object appeared to enter the harbour, witnesses reported a glowing light on the surface and unusual yellow foam nearby. Believing that an aircraft might have crashed, local residents and authorities began a search and rescue operation. All known aircraft were accounted for, and subsequent searches failed to recover wreckage or identify the object. The incident was investigated by Canadian authorities and remained officially unexplained.
Additional Notes
The incident prompted an official search after authorities initially considered the possibility of an aircraft crash. Canadian military divers later searched the area but found no tangible evidence identifying the object. Although several explanations have been proposed over the years, no definitive identification was established in the official investigation.
The Location Today
Shag Harbour remains a working coastal community. The Shag Harbour UFO Incident Interpretive Centre presents accounts, archival material and exhibits about the 1967 report. A nearby UFO gazebo and picnic area provide a public view toward the harbour waters where witnesses reported the object entering the sea.
