Summary
During the night of 2–3 November 1957, several motorists around Levelland, Texas, independently reported encounters with brightly illuminated unidentified objects. Witness descriptions varied, but commonly referred to glowing, oval, egg-shaped or elongated objects seen on or near rural roads. Several witnesses reported that their vehicle engines stalled and headlights dimmed or went out as the objects approached, only to function normally again after they departed. Police received a series of reports during the night, and the incidents were subsequently investigated by the U.S. Air Force as part of Project Blue Book.
Additional Notes
One of the first reports came from Pedro Saucedo and Joe Salaz, who described a brightly illuminated object passing low over their truck west of Levelland. Saucedo reported a loud sound, strong wind and heat as the object passed overhead. During the following hours, other motorists contacted police with broadly similar accounts, including temporary engine and headlight failures. Law-enforcement officers searched the surrounding roads, and some also reported unusual lights at a distance. Project Blue Book investigated the case and attributed the reports primarily to severe electrical weather and ball lightning, an explanation that has remained controversial among later investigators. No photographs or verified physical evidence of the reported objects are known.
