Summary

The Hessdalen Lights are unexplained luminous phenomena observed in the remote Hessdalen valley in central Norway. Witnesses have described bright white, yellow and reddish lights that may remain stationary, move through the valley or appear as brief flashes. A dramatic increase in sightings beginning in late 1981 attracted scientific interest and led to the establishment of Project Hessdalen. The phenomena have since been photographed, filmed and detected with scientific instruments. Various natural explanations have been proposed, but no single theory has conclusively accounted for all observations.

Additional Notes

Reports of unusual lights in the Hessdalen region date back to at least the 1930s. Sightings became particularly frequent from December 1981 through 1984, with up to around 20 reports per week during periods of peak activity. Project Hessdalen was established in 1983, and during its first major field investigation from 21 January to 26 February 1984, researchers recorded 53 visual observations. An automated observation station was installed in the valley in 1998. Sightings continue to be reported, although considerably less frequently than during the early 1980s. - During the 1984 scientific field investigation alone, 53 observations of the phenomenon were recorded. Hundreds of sightings had been reported by residents since the increased activity began in 1981.

The Location Today

The Hessdalen valley remains a rural landscape associated with recurring reports of unusual lights. Observation and research activities have taken place in the area, but sightings cannot be guaranteed. Publicly accessible roads and viewpoints may offer opportunities to explore the valley; access to private property or research installations should not be assumed.
