Summary

The swamps and cypress forests around Ochopee and Big Cypress National Preserve are one of the best-known centers of Florida’s Skunk Ape legend. Reports describe a large, upright, hair-covered creature with reddish-brown or dark fur and a powerful foul odor. Sightings intensified during the 1970s and again in 1997, when numerous witnesses reported an unidentified bipedal animal in the Big Cypress area and a local fire chief photographed a tall, hairy figure near a dirt road.

Additional Notes

Florida reports of a foul-smelling, ape-like creature became especially prominent during the 1970s. Witnesses typically described a large biped covered in reddish-brown or dark hair, and the creature eventually became known as the Skunk Ape because of the strong odor frequently associated with encounters. Big Cypress became a major hotspot during another wave in 1997. Miami New Times reported that several groups of tourists independently claimed to have seen a Bigfoot-like creature in the area. Ochopee Fire District Chief Vince Doerr also photographed a tall, reddish-brown hairy figure while driving to work near Burns Road. Researcher Dave Shealy, whose family has long been associated with Ochopee, subsequently searched the swamps for tracks and other evidence. Large human-like footprints were reported near bait sites, while skeptics suggested that the sightings could involve hoaxes, misidentification or people wearing costumes. Big Cypress officials expressed skepticism that an unknown primate could inhabit the preserve undetected. The Ochopee area later became culturally inseparable from the legend. The Skunk Ape Research Headquarters developed into a local attraction devoted to sightings, casts and stories surrounding Florida’s best-known cryptid.

The Location Today

Big Cypress National Preserve remains a protected landscape of wetlands, forests and wildlife habitat in southern Florida. Public visitor areas and trails can be explored, but alleged Skunk Ape sightings do not identify a confirmed visitor attraction at an exact encounter point.
