Summary
In December 2000, two photographs showing a large, dark, ape-like figure were anonymously mailed to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department in Florida. The accompanying letter claimed that the creature had appeared repeatedly near a private property in the Myakka area and was initially thought to be an escaped orangutan. The images soon became known as the “Myakka Skunk Ape photographs” and remain among the most famous alleged photographic records connected to Florida’s Skunk Ape legend.
Additional Notes
The anonymous sender described seeing an unfamiliar animal near her property on several nights. According to the letter, the creature appeared around vegetation close to the house, and the woman photographed it twice using a flash. The images show a large, dark, heavily haired figure partly obscured by palmettos and other vegetation. The photographs were sent to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department together with a letter dated December 2000. The writer reportedly believed the animal might be an escaped orangutan and expressed concern that it could pose a danger. Because the sender remained anonymous, investigators were unable to verify the precise location or reconstruct the encounter independently. Cryptozoologists David Barkasy and Loren Coleman later examined the photographs and argued that several details were consistent with a large primate-like animal. Critics, however, have proposed alternatives including a costume, a model or an escaped exotic ape. No interpretation has been demonstrated conclusively from the photographs alone. The Myakka images remain important because they are among the clearest and most widely circulated photographs associated with the Skunk Ape. Their anonymous origin and lack of a confirmed exact location, however, make independent verification difficult.
The Location Today
The Myakka area still contains wetlands, woodland, roads and a mixture of protected and privately held land. Myakka River State Park welcomes visitors, but it has not been established that the location where the alleged Skunk Ape photographs were taken lies within the park or is publicly accessible.
