Summary
Schloss Bladenhorst, a historic moated castle in Castrop-Rauxel, is associated with a long-standing but undated legend of a mysterious White Lady reportedly seen within the building, particularly around its tower. Modern accounts include visitors and media personnel who claimed unusual experiences, while paranormal teams have repeatedly investigated the property since at least 2015. During a 2025 investigation documented by German broadcaster WDR, an unattended camera recorded a door closing without a visible person causing it.
Additional Notes
The origins of the White Lady tradition at Schloss Bladenhorst remain unclear. Although the history of the estate reaches back to the 13th century, no reliable date has been established for the first reported apparition. Castle owner Bodo Möhrke has stated that the story was passed down orally and that no written record establishing its origin is known. Modern accounts describe a white-clad figure appearing around the castle tower; one visiting reporter reportedly saw such a figure at a window when the woman who might normally have provided a conventional explanation was away. Documented paranormal investigations can be traced to at least September 2015, when Ghosthunter NRWUP examined the castle. The group returned in 2016 and again in later years. Reports connected with investigations have included sudden temperature changes and unusual sounds, although the castle itself provides numerous potential environmental influences, including old masonry and timber, the surrounding moat, vegetation and animals living on the property. In 2025, WDR accompanied members of Ghost Team Leverkusen during another investigation. Cameras and motion-sensitive equipment were installed in areas including the Knights' Hall and cellar and left operating overnight. Audio experiments produced unusual noises but no clearly identifiable voice. More intriguingly, one unattended camera recorded a door closing while no person was visible causing the movement. The published report did not establish what caused the door to close, leaving the incident open to interpretation. Because the White Lady tradition is undated and reports span an unknown period, the witness count given here is a conservative estimate rather than a documented total. The Sort Year 2015 represents the earliest currently documented modern paranormal investigation, not the beginning of the legend.
