Summary

Since mid-2026, residents across several suburbs of Cape Town have reported a mysterious low-frequency hum, most noticeable during the night and early morning hours. More than 100 reports prompted residents and local officials to search for its source, while suspected industrial and municipal causes were investigated without producing a confirmed explanation. In September, a city councillor even joined residents on an early-morning search for the elusive sound. As of October 2026, no single source has been publicly established.

Additional Notes

Reports of the Cape Town Hum emerged during the winter of 2026, initially centred on Table View and Parklands before similar complaints were recorded in Bloubergstrand, Milnerton, Edgemead and surrounding areas. Residents described a persistent humming, droning or mechanical sound that was particularly noticeable during quiet nighttime and early-morning hours. By early September, Ward 113 councillor Sue van der Linde had received 148 reports after establishing a dedicated channel for residents to submit locations, times and recordings. Several apparently plausible sources were investigated. The Astron Energy refinery and the Potsdam wastewater treatment works were checked, while pump stations were also considered. According to van der Linde, however, reported Hum events did not consistently correspond with periods when pumping activity was taking place. The City of Cape Town subsequently examined another possibility: specialised vacuum and high-pressure jetting trucks used for overnight cleaning of sewer pump-station wet wells. These vehicles can produce substantial mechanical noise and normally operate between midnight and 4 a.m. Officials planned to compare their operating schedules with residents' reports, but the City did not establish that the maintenance work was responsible for the Hum. On 10 September, van der Linde and resident Nicholas Gotsell took to the streets during the early morning after fresh reports of the sound. Despite following a new lead and attempting to trace the noise while it was being reported, the search failed to identify its source. As of early October 2026, no confirmed common origin for the Cape Town Hum has been publicly announced.

The Location Today

The Hum has been reported across a broad area of Cape Town's western and northern suburbs rather than at a single identifiable location. Table View, Parklands and Bloubergstrand form the centre of many reports, with additional complaints extending toward Milnerton and Edgemead. As of October 2026, the reported sound has not been traced to a confirmed physical source.
